Triple Citrus Guacamole

Many of us know that limes and avocados are a great combo, but I really love any citrus fruits with avocado! In this Triple Citrus Guacamole, I brought together three citrus fruits: grapefruit, orange, and lime, and paired them with traditional guacamole ingredients like avocado, red onion, and cilantro. The result is an extra tart and tangy guacamole that celebrates winter citrus season!

For years, I’ve loved a simple salad of grapefruit and avocado, sometimes on top of salad greens, sometimes just tossed together with a little salt and pepper. I got to thinking…why not mash them together into guacamole?! Grapefruit and avocado are great together, and even better on top of tortilla chips (as most things are, really). I added orange to this guacamole for a little natural sweetness to balance out the tartness of the grapefruit and lime.

Triple Citrus Guacamole makes a great appetizer dip for a cozy New Year’s Eve at home, or any of the upcoming football games over the next few weeks. It’s a bright, tart, and unexpected twist on an old standby!

Step-by-step photos demonstrating how to remove segments from citrus fruit
For this recipe, we get to practice a knife cut called "supreme." To supreme a citrus fruit such as grapefruit or orange, start with a good, sharp knife. Slice off the top and bottom of the fruit. Slice the peel and white pith away from the fruit, working your way 360 degrees around the whole fruit. Holding the peeled fruit over a bowl to catch the juice, gently slice between the membranes to release the citrus segment, letting it fall into the bowl.

Squeezing the juice out of the cut citrus fruits into a bowl
Squeeeeeze the extra juice from the remaining fruit after removing the segments. Do this same process to both the grapefruit and orange. Set aside.

Avocado, red onion, cilantro, lime zest and juice, salt and pepper being mashed together in a bowl with a potato masher
Add diced avocado, red onion, cilantro, lime zest and juice, and salt and pepper to a bowl. Mash, mash, mash until you reach your preferred guacamole texture. Gently fold in the reserved grapefruit and orange segments, along with their juice, until combined with the mashed avocado mixture.

Ingredients

1 ruby red grapefruit

1 navel orange

1 lime, zested and juiced

4 large, ripe avocados

1/4 red onion, minced

1 bunch cilantro, stems removed, leaves minced

1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

1/2 tsp. ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting the grapefruit and orange into supremes. (See photos for additional instructions.) Collect supreme sections of the grapefruit and orange in a bowl. Be sure to squeeze the excess juice out of the remaining citrus flesh into the bowl with the sections. Set aside.
  2. Dice avocado and place in a medium bowl. Add minced red onion and cilantro, lime zest and juice, salt, and pepper. Mash avocado with a potato masher or fork, until the guacamole is the texture you desire. (I like to leave a few chunks of avocado for texture.)
  3. Add reserved grapefruit and orange sections and their juice to the guacamole, and gently fold to combine.
  4. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips for dipping!
