Rosemary Lemonade

Rosemary Lemonade is your new, refreshing summertime beverage. Pair your favorite lemonade with a rosemary simple syrup, and you may never go back to plain, old lemonade again! The herbal aroma and flavor makes tart, sweet lemonade even more refreshing.

Rosemary Lemonade is steeped in nostalgia for me. In college, a local pizza place served rosemary lemonade year-round, and even after I was of legal drinking age, I still couldn’t resist ordering rosemary lemonade with my pizza (and a beer, of course). I also used to grab a rosemary lemonade to go as I walked home with my pizza dough on nights I picked up dough to make my own pizza.

Not only does rosemary make lemonade even more delicious, but it adds health benefits, too! Rosemary is loaded with anti-inflammatory antioxidants, and studies have linked rosemary to improved memory and cognition, reduced stress and anxiety, and improved mood. Consuming rosemary isn’t the only way to get those brain benefits - even just inhaling the aroma of rosemary is associated with better cognition and mood!

So as you prepare this rosemary simple syrup for your lemonade, inhale deeply a few times. Pour yourself some lemonade, add the rosemary simple syrup, and sip slowly as you relax and hydrate this summer.

Ingredients

For rosemary simple syrup:

2 cups water

2/3 cup granulated sugar

6 inches fresh rosemary sprigs

For serving:

Ice

8 oz. lemonade

2 oz. rosemary simple syrup

Instructions

  1. Combine water, sugar, and rosemary in a medium saucepan. Heat on medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved, stirring occasionally and pressing the rosemary sprigs against the side of the pan with a spoon to help release the essential oils.
  2. Once sugar is fully dissolved, turn off the heat, and remove the pan from the stove. Allow the rosemary to steep for 15 minutes.
  3. After 15 minutes, remove the rosemary sprigs and discard. Transfer the syrup to a clean jar for storage. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  4. To make one serving of lemonade, add ice to a large glass. Fill with 8 oz. lemonade and 2 oz. rosemary simple syrup. Stir to combine, and enjoy!

Note:

  • To make a large batch or pitcher, the simple syrup recipe yields 18 oz., so combine one batch of the rosemary simple syrup with 72 oz. of lemonade. Serve in large glasses over ice!
